Something has gone wrong. We know in our hearts that things are not right. There is an emptiness that we cannot fill. We know that there is a sadness that cannot be escaped. We know that there is an anxiety that cannot be stilled. We are drinking from the cup of chaos and confusion that our forefathers have handed down to us and the water is bitter.
Moms and dads are accustomed to dishing out advice. To try and guide a son or daughter through the narrow straights of life is part of the responsibility of a parent. Some guidance, if not heeded, will cost, but the price is not too severe. “Brush your teeth before you go to bed,” mom says. If you don’t take their advice then you might have to suffer the sounds of a dentist’s drill. Oh, it won’t be a walk in the park, but you will get over it. “Be sure and write down all of your homework assignments,” dad chimes in. If you fail to heed the advice then you will probably make a bad grade. No big deal, right? I mean you can make it up on the next test or maybe the teacher will let you do some work for extra credit.
We are now entering the time of year when we as a church look to the upcoming year, when we reevaluate all of the ministries in the church, and when each of us as individuals reevaluate our stewardship of God’s gifts given so freely to each of us – our abilities, our time, and our finances. We do this for a very good reason. We need, every now and then, to stand back and examine our lives, each aspect of our life in relation to God to determine if He would desire to use us in a new or different way, or if He would desire that we give more of our time, skills, and even our finances to the work of His glorious Kingdom.
There is a movement, a love fest that is sweeping our country. The infatuation, or love, however you wish to describe it has everything to do with the tender feelings and warm thoughts that we have when we think about angels. It seems that angels are everywhere. You can buy their pictures in bookstores, purchase porcelain figurines depicting their cherub charm, and visit their web pages if you wish.
