I hope you won’t mind me taking you back to Israel for one more week before we turn our attention back to our study of the Gospel of John. There are just so many sites I wish you could see and so much of God’s Word I wish we could read together while actually sitting in the very place where it took place. I can remember the first time I went to Tel Dan. I have to be honest with you and tell you that I really had no idea of the significance of the site or the important lesson for you and me that is found in the life of Jeroboam.
I want to take you to the site of the Northern tribe of Dan and the time of the divided Kingdom of Israel. Dan is located about 100 miles north of Jerusalem and it is the place of one of the saddest stories you will read about in God’s Word. Let me set the stage for you. It is a sad story, but a great lesson for you and for me.Continue reading “No Compromise! 1 Kings 11-13”
This has been an incredible week for all of us in Vacation Bible School. We’ve been on an expedition to Mt. Everest and have learned that on the long journey of life God is faithful to provide everything we need for the journey. Our very first memory verse of the week was from 2 Corinthians 9:8 where Paul wrote, “And God will generously provide all you need.,,” We need that assurance on the journey of life because sometimes the unexpected can happen, oftentimes the unexpected is certain to happen. Sometimes things don’t go according to plan on this journey of life. Sometimes terrifying times can come about in our lives, scary times when we need to be reassured that God will provide for us everything we need for the journey. This isn’t just a truth that our children have learned in Vacation Bible School, it is a reality that happens in people’s lives each and every day. As we prepare to begin a New Year I want us to sit down and consider a few things before we take our place at the starting line. I want us to look back over the ground we?ve covered in the past year and ask the Lord to show us where He wants to change our course for the upcoming year. I want us to consider ?who? God is calling us to be for the New Year. I want us to consider ?what? He is calling us to in the New Year. I want us to consider ?how? we can know God?s will and then follow in faithfulness. I raise these questions because I believe that the time is now. We can?t sit around and wait for things to get better, we can?t wait for society to change so that we will be more acceptable to those around us, we can?t put God off until we feel like serving Him?the time is now.
??????????Long before the showdown at the OK Corral there was a showdown of epic proportions in a land far away. The site was Mount Carmel, located on the Mediterranean coast of northern Israel, overlooking the modern-day city of Haifa. When the Israelites made their way into the Promised Land each tribe was allotted land. The tribe of Asher was given the area around what we know as Mount Carmel. (Joshua 19:26)

For many years I have dreamed of going to Israel. I?ve been studying God?s Word for over 25 years and if you study God?s Word then you study Israel because Israel is the epicenter of biblical studies. I?ve studied God?s Word so much during the past 25 years that, before going to Israel the past two weeks, I honestly felt like I had been there already. When I stepped off the plane and began my 17 day journey through Israel I realized that ?feeling? like I?d been there couldn?t even compare to what I was about to experience.? The best comparison I can offer you is to encourage you to think for a moment like you are 12 years old again. Do you remember the commercials you use to watch about Disney World? The rides? The smiles? The fun? The excitement?? Those commercials caused me to salivate when I was a kid, didn?t they do the same thing to you? But, any of you who have ever had the opportunity to go to Disney World soon found out that the commercials didn?t even come close to portraying what you were about to experience when you drove through the gates!? That is the way I felt when we drove up to the Sea of Galilee from the airport!? Actually it was more than the excitement of Disney World for me because Disney World was just plain fun, but going to the Holy Land meant that I would be walking where Jesus walked.

Many years ago, during the Boxer Rebellion in China, there was a young girl who made a difference. She stayed at a mission station and the insurgents had just captured the little station where she was staying. The men blocked all of the gates but one. The captors placed a large wooden cross on the ground in the walkway of the mission station. The men passed the word that any of the 100 students who would trample the cross under their feet would be set free. For those who refused to trample the cross there would be a firing squad awaiting them.
